To refute a statement is to prove that it is wrong.

Incorrect: At the press conference, the president refuted claims that he had mishandled the financial crisis.

It is unlikely that the president disproved the claims (perhaps using algebra!).

Use 'denied', 'rejected' or 'disagreed with'.
