‘Few’ means not many, usually a negative meaning; ‘a few’ means some, perhaps enough:

 ‘Few of the girls managed to escape.’ (5 out of 230) 

‘A few of the girls managed to escape.’ (25 out of 230)

 The same for uncountable nouns: ‘little’ = not much; ‘a little’ = some
