Only use when introducing as parallel or background information a subject that is significantly different from the previous one:

Incorrect: Kylie Minogue has announced that she is divorcing her husband of 5 years... Meanwhile, she claimed that he has been unfaithful. (same subject)

Correct: Kylie Minogue has announced that she is divorcing her husband of 5 years... Meanwhile, the singer’s American tour has hit difficulties with concert venues. (different subjects)

 Like ‘however’, ‘moreover’ etc., ‘meanwhile’ should be followed by a comma if the first word in a sentence, or enclosed by commas if not.
