This secret wisdom I’ve found in the dark corners of the internet, in a little-known place called YouTube. Somewhere I don’t recommend anyone to go (unless rightly prepared).
Anyhow, let’s talk about the method.
The main idea of this method is to try to understand what YouTube finds as trending videos on a particular topic.
Step 1
Turn on VPN from the location of your target audience. Go to any browser, and open a new ‘Incognito’ Page.
Then go ahead and type in youtube.com.
Step 2
Now you see the topics and videos that YouTube thinks are trending at the moment. It is helpful to study them as well, however, we want to go further and find out what’s trending in your topic.
For that, type in the search bar a simple search, related to a video or a general field that is related to your channel.
Now scroll through the results, opening in new tabs videos with many views (500K and more) and were published relatively recently (up to 2 years).
You should go ahead and watch 10-20 seconds of each video that you just opened.
Step 3
Go back to the Home Page, without closing the browser, and update the page. What you will get now is YouTube suggestions of trending videos on the topic you just searched.
Look for exciting videos and topics. What you see now are popular videos and not all of them are trending.
In order to find the gems, and the truly trending videos, search for the videos that were published in the last 3 months and have x3-10 views to subscribers on the channel. The newer the video is, the better. If you find such a video, that’s a good indicator of a trending topic.
While scrolling and searching, keep opening interesting videos and refresh the home page. This way YouTube will keep showing you better suggestions.
Write down the topics you’ve searched, we’re taking this party up to 11.
Go to Google Trends and double-check the trending topics. See both Web Search as well as YouTube Search, pay attention to potential breakout topics, and compare it with another topic to see what works best. You can take it further, and check the topic on Ahrefs or BuzzSumo, we have access to both.
